Which is Better for Your HVAC System: HEPA or MERV Filters?

HEPA and MERV filters are two types of air filters commonly used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the type of filter you choose will depend on your specific needs and the environment in which it will be used. HEPA filters, or High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters, are designed to trap very small particles, such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and tobacco smoke. They work by using a fine mesh of fibers that trap particles as they pass through the filter. HEPA filters are highly effective and can trap up to 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns in size or larger. On the other hand, MERV filters, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value filters, are designed to trap a range of particle sizes, from pollen and pet dander to mold spores and bacteria. They work by using a combination of mechanical and electrostatic filtration to trap particles. MERV filters are rated on a scale from 1 to 16, with higher numbe
