Why doesn't my AC cool?

Your air conditioner isn't a wizard. The heat and humidity of summer, on the other hand, vanish as the temperature is lowered. Ta-da! So, what do you do if your arctic air blast doesn't arrive as expected? Here are a few troubleshooting strategies to try before calling for help that may save you money on a service call.

Check the thermostat

Your thermostat may be set on a continual fan instead of cooling if the AC system fan is operating but not blowing cold air. Check to see if it's set to "cool" or "auto" and make any necessary adjustments. Make sure your programmable thermostat isn't in vacation mode or set back for milder temps if you have one.

Check your air filter

A clogged air filter can obstruct airflow and cause your home to overheat. It can even force the system to shut down completely in extreme circumstances. If the airflow isn't as strong as it should be or the room isn't as cool as it should be, look for your system's air filter, switch it off, inspect it, and replace it if it's unclean.

A dirty, clogged, or obstructed outdoor unit could be the cause of your air conditioner not cooling your home. Dirt, grass, leaves, and other flying debris can build up on the unit's coil, reducing cooling capacity or causing the system to shut down completely. With a brush attachment, vacuum the coil, or rinse the particles away with a hose.

Undersized System

If your air conditioner keeps you comfortable in average or mild temperatures but suffers when the weather becomes hotter, it's possible that it's small for your home. Contacting a certified HVAC expert for an accurate assessment of your home's cooling demands is the best method to handle size issues.

You might not be able to solve your cooling problem on your own, depending on the situation. Understanding what to look for and performing some self-troubleshooting can, however, assist your HVAC contractor in resolving the issue.
